Character Sketch: Meet Your Main Character Using “Paper Dolls for Writers”

How are you going to enter your main character’s psyche if you don’t know what he or she looks like? Or how she manages to dress herself in the morning? In this totally different and very fun class you get to play with paper models, pick out costumes, and hair styles, and get to know your character they way we meet people in real life. Face it, when we meet new people we often judge them by the kinds of clothes they wear and by how much effort they put into personal grooming. In this course, you get to see what your character looks like, and gain access to her decision making process. Instead of writing a long character bio, here is a tool for those of us who are visual thinkers. If you are a beginner or an advanced writer, this exercise helps you render your character with true, telling details, and make your readers fall in love with your character at first sight.

Revise Your Work Like a Rock Star: Welcome to the Master Scene Profile

“Revise, revise, revise.” Yes, there are days when I hate hearing that advice. To make the daunting task of planning and revising my books easier, I invented the “Master Scene Profile.” It’s a form you use that will help you analyze the scenes in your project, and figure out how to make each scene jump off the page. How to add sensory detail that works with your story, how to track the objectives and obstacles your character faces going into the scene, and how to add emotional depth to each scene. In this course you will receive a free copy of “The Writer’s Coloring Book.®” This class will help both beginning and advanced writers to plan your big revision, and help you stay sane during the process.

Class date: Saturday, September 19, 2015 Class Start: 1:00 p.m. EST

The Writer’s Coloring Book Goes NaNoWriMo!

Yes my darlings it is that time of year, when we collectively gird our loins for National Novel Writing Month. Or what I used to lovingly call, “National Vomit on the Page Month.” Because sure, you can chunk out 50,000 words in a month–but are they “good” words??? Well my doves, it’s “The Writer’s Coloring Book®” to the rescue! In this two-session class you will get to know your main character using the Character Sketch exercise, and we will review how to create your very own Story World Mandala and how that is going to be your lifeline while you write your first draft. In our second session we’ll hear everyone’s loglines and brainstorm how to improve them. By the time you finish, you will be ready to rocket through your first draft in no time.

Class date: Saturdays, October 3 & 17, 2015 Class Start: 1:00 p.m. EST

Cost: $80.00

Length: 90 minutes for each class

With your paid class fee you receive a copy of “The Writer’s Coloring Book®” and my “8 Tips for Writing Faster” article. (hint: if you want to read the article, it’s a free sample at writerscoloringbook.com)
